Modernising a learning platform used by millions of students

Incremental migration of a legacy assessment engine to cloud-native services, with zero downtime across the academic year.

The challenge

A decade-old assessment engine struggled at term start and blocked new features for instructors.

What we built

Using a strangler-fig approach, we carved out assessment delivery, grading and reporting into independent services while the legacy system kept running, backed by load tests replaying real term-start traffic.

The result

The new platform handled the busiest week of the year with headroom to spare, and instructors got new analytics features months ahead of plan.
